Cataracts
Over time some people experience a clouding of the lens of their eye. This clouding will cause impaired vision as the cataract worsens. The problem can be corrected by removing the interior portion of the lens and replacing it with an IOP (interocular lens). Depending on the type of lens chosen, post-surgery results can be such that corrective lenses are not required to be worn. Cataract surgery is a procedure that takes about 30 minutes and does not require a hospital stay.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a term we used to describe a group of eye diseases that result from damage to the optic nerve often associated with increased pressure inside the eye.
Patients with glaucoma do not experience any symptoms until damage has already occurred to the optic nerve and vision is affected. This is why it is important for patients above the age of 40 to have regular vision pressure tests.
Dry Eyes
Dry Eye Syndrome is caused by inadequate tear film as a result of insufficient tear film production or excessive evaporation of tears. Dry Eyes can be serious because the condition can lead to impaired vision, scarring of the cornea and infection.
The composition of healthy tear film is a delicate balance that can be affected by such things aging, medications and allergens. New technologies exist to help the various glands and ducts of the eye maintain healthy function to alleviate Dry Eye Syndrome.
Retinal Disease
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a gradual, progressive and painless deterioration of the central part of the retina. Since AMD only affect the centre of the retina patients do not lose their site entirely. However, the center of the retina is the part that perceives detail; hence, those with AMD experience difficulty reading, watching TV or driving.
Oculoplastics
Oculplastics is a subspeciality of Ophthalmology dealing with diseases and conditions of the areas immediately surrounding the eye (eg. eyelids, eyebrows, tear duct system and the tissue that supports and protects the eye known as the orbit). Conditions that affect these areas can arise due to congenital defects, aging, injury and tumours. Some oculoplastic conditions, if not treated, can result in pain, impaired vision and damage to the eye.
Paediatric Ophthalmology
Paediatric Ophthalmology is a sub-specialty of General Ophthalmology that deals with the development of eye systems and diseases that can affect normal development of the eyes in children.
Amongst other things, a Paediatric Ophthalmologist will treat children with a misalignment of the eyes or a lazy eye such that, as the child grows, their condition is managed and minimized as much as possible. A Paediatric Ophthalmologist is qualified to perform complex eye surgery to correct such conditions.
